A Chicago firefighter is recovering after a fall during a fire in Humboldt Park Sunday, resulting in a number of broken bones, including broken vertebrae, according to Patrick Cleary, president of the union that represents Chicago firefighters.
The fire was on the second floor of a three-story apartment building in the 800 block of North Hamlin Avenue about 6 p.m., Cleary said.
The firefighter was on the roof of the building and fell down a “light shaft,” a vertical hole in the middle of the building that lets light into rooms, according to Cleary.
The man was taken Stroger Hospital, Cleary said.
“(He was) still in lots of pain and they still need to do more tests and imaging,” Cleary said Monday morning.
Larry Merritt, Chicago Fire Department spokesman, said Monday the firefighter was stable and “in good spirits.” He declined to provide any other details about the fall.
