Player testing: Checking out Fujikura's Axiom iron shafts

Sep 23, 2023

Can the new Axiom iron shafts help your game? Here, in a partnership between True Spec Golf and Fujikura, their experts tell you everything you need to know.

Steel has long dominated the iron-shaft market for its affordability, consistency and durability in handling the impact of iron hitting the turf. However, new iron shaft technology has quickly begun to usurp the steel-shaft market by incorporating the stuff that makes composite wood shafts so popular — into iron shafts. Fujikura, one of the leading shaft manufacturers, has been diligently promoting the benefits of graphite shaft technology in irons and urging players to recognize the advantages of using composites throughout their sets.

We recently had the privilege of observing several iron-shaft fittings at True Spec Golf‘s location at Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Led by Master Clubfitter Marc Roybal and Fujikura's Product and Brand Manager, Spencer Reynolds, we spent a day gaining insights into the new Axiom iron shafts.

"One of the key components of our popular Ventus wood shafts is VeloCore Technology, which we have incorporated into the all-new Axiom shafts," Reynolds said. "The challenge was to ensure that the iron shaft delivered the same results that players are accustomed to in our woods line. We rigorously tested this shaft to death for over a year with hundreds of players, and we are very confident in its performance. We’re pumped to introduce it to more players."

VeloCore is a proprietary multi-material bias core construction that enhances stability, particularly during the swing's transition and impact phases. The Axiom shaft is divided into three parts:

1. Long Iron: AXIOM long parallel shafts (#2, #3, #4) are designed to consistently launch the ball with optimized spin to achieve precise landings on the green.

2. Mid Iron: AXIOM mid parallel shafts (#5, #6, #7) enhance shotmaking, making it easier to execute various shot types.

3. Short Iron: AXIOM short parallel shafts (#8, #9, W) prioritize maximum accuracy and tighter dispersion for improved short shots.

The Axiom shaft is available in three weights (75g, 105g and 125g), each offering different levels of torque and feel to provide a responsive and stable experience throughout the swing.

When asked for their initial impressions, we received feedback from a scratch player and a 10-handicapper. The 10 handicap said the shaft exceeded his expectations.

"I was hoping for a higher ball flight [than my current gamers], and that's exactly what I got, along with significantly more yardage," he said. "I can feel the clubhead better, and the difference between good shots and misses was surprisingly minimal."

The praise didn't end there.

"I was also pleasantly surprised by how good they felt," said the scratch golfer. "Despite a few mishits, the results were far superior to what I was getting with steel. These shafts are definitely going in my bag."
